Duplicate Blog Content

Do you have a MySpace account?
Do you use your MySpace blog?
Do you have a blog outside of MySpace?
Is your other blog on your own domain name?

If you answered NO to any of those questions, you are missing out on a traffic source that can reach further than your other marketing efforts.

I maintain multiple blogs including one on MySpace and is one of the many topics I teach for Search Engine Marketing (SEM). Within that topic is a lesson on duplicate content.

Duplicate Content refers to identical information appearing on multiple sites. When posting to numerous blogs, always make changes to the article each time you post it so it appears to be original.

That is what I teach and yet, yesterday I got lazy and simply copied and pasted the original article I wrote for my other log, onto my MySpace blog. I did not know that Google picked up on that until I saw the same article listed twice in the Google Alerts this morning. An interesting note is that the article was picked up in two categories.

I monitor Google Alerts to see what is happening in various industries. Once a day I get an email with the topics posted in press releases and blogs in each topic.

Today I noticed that my article was picked up in BOTH categories, once for the topic stop Foreclosure and once for the signature I put in each article that includes Website Managers.

Although that may be good to reach multiple audiences, it does the search engine positioning no good since it will only be credited once. The first one that Google found will be the one listed in their search engine results. The other will be ignored.

Lazy shortcuts have their benefits as well as their repercussions. Oh and if you are not blogging yet, GET BUSY!
