The Frustrations of Moving Websites

There are times when you may want to move your existing website to another web host. Maybe the services where your site is now hosted do not include everything you want to build your business. Maybe the support or customer service is not up to the standards you once expected and/or received.

When you choose a new website hosting company, moving your site their can be frustrating. Not all the services transfer at once, making it a very confusing time for all involved. As an example, even though your web pages could should up at the new host within an hour of changing the name servers (an integral part of DNS), the mail does not transfer allow with it.

When the mail does transfer, usually shortly after the web pages do, you may not be able to access the mail from your home computer using your email program, whether Outlook, Outlook Express, Mozilla Thunderbird, or any other program.

The reason for that is due to the schedule your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is on for updating their records. Those records allow you to access other websites because you connect to the Internet through them. Your ISP maintains a list of hosts called the DNS database.

While you are waiting for the site to transfer, you should transfer all of your files to the new server. Once in place, the only thing you can do is wait for the other servers on the Internet to update their records.

Once you can access your new site, go through all of the pages, check the forms if you have any and make sure all of the links are working properly. Your new web host should be available to answer any questions or address any concerns you have, before, during and after the move.
