Website Managers Feels Google Slap

On a recent search for website managers at Google, I found that the #2 position we maintained for over a year had been taken by another site. Searching through the first 100 results, I did not see Website Managers at all. That got me looking to see what changes I recently made that could cause such a negative effect, also known as the “Google Slap”, which penalizes websites for various reasons.

Monitoring your website position in the search engine result pages (SERPs) is an important aspect of Internet marketing. Periodically searching for your primary keywords on the major search engines will keep you informed of where your site is in the lists.

You could move up or down the SERPs on any given day. Some search engines change more frequently than others. Google appears to change much more frequently than Yahoo, ASK.com, and MSN.com, who all still list Website Managers high on their results.

One of the features I like about Yahoo search is that it also shows the position number in the results. That gives me a real quick idea of where the site is, instead of having to count the results like I do on Google.

Another interesting note is when I searched for MySpace secrets on Google, I saw that my MySpace Secrets web page at www.affref.com/myspace.html that shows how to benefit from using MySpace had moved UP 13 places in the past week. I find that interesting because I had not changed that page recently. I added more pages to the site and updated older pages, all linking to the MySpace Secrets page, so I am sure that helped.

So now the question is, how do I get Website Managers back on top? One way is to just keep getting more links to the site. Link popularity is one major factor in getting listed higher. They should be natural links, not reciprocal links, although reciprocal links can help if the sites are related.

Other methods of getting back up the SERPs is to keep blogging, participating in discussion forums, social bookmarking, updating the website by changing a few things around and monitoring the results.

Google may be the most popular search engine and have a higher market share than the others, but we still get more visitors and sales leads from Yahoo, without constantly trying to appease them.
