Technorati Tips and Plugins for WordPress

Adding Technorati tags to your WordPress blog posts can boost awareness and get your free website traffic. Technorati is one of the foremost blog directories that links keywords to blogs, rates each blog and shows an excerpt from the latest post.

Simple Tags is the successor of Simple Tagging Plugin and is a great tool to manage your WordPress tags in Related Posts, Related Tags, Auto link tags, Tag suggestion, etc.

The New Simple Tags by Broobles is much more powerful than the original version. You have 5 full pages of options. Most of the options include descriptions and a link for more help. Some of them are not so explicit with the descriptions, but can be figured out by the section title and options.

There are general options that you can use get up and running. Then there are the advanced sections. If you have been reading this blog for any length of time, you will know that I like getting into the advanced sections.

The easiest way to use Simple Tags is the first create the tags you want to use in your article. Then let Simple Tags do the rest, if you enabled Auto Tagging. Be aware though, that your page could load slower using this option, because the page has to be analyzed for the tags to be created.

The older method still works too. Copy the tags you created for the post, paste them at the bottom of your article and surround them with the tags container:

[tags]WordPress, Simple Tags, Technorati tips[/tag]

If extra characters appear in between your tags after pasting them, replace the characters with commas. Mine show as an X between each tag when I copy and paste them all.

If you use SEO Smart Links or another plugin that automatically link keywords and phrases in your posts, then you will uncheck the box next to the option, “Active auto link tags into post content“. Otherwise the two plugins will conflict in that area and the most persistent will prevail.

I tried that so I would know which one would win. From what I can see so far, none of the existing links have changed. If the page load time changed while the two plugins battled it out, it was not by a noticeable amount.

With the auto link option disabled, you will have to insert the tags manually as described above. While testing this, I noticed that the option, “Automatically display tags list into post content” was disabled. You need to enable that for the links to show up on the page.

I see an issue with the AdSense Deluxe plugin. One of my tags is “home-based-business”. The “home-” is picked up by AdSense Deluxe for some reason and the link is completely destroyed.

Install the New Simple Tags, go through the options and pay close attention to your generated tags.

  • The writing here are great. I always get a lot from reading other sites about Google Adsense! It’s such an exciting topic. Click here if you’d like to check out my site. Thanks again for a very educational site!

  • What a cool blog! This is just what I was looking for.

  • Not certain if any of your other visitors have asked this…but what kind of theme are you using for your blog? It probably sounds a little weird but I really like the footer’s style. Also is this theme widgetized? I’m running a blog too but can’t ever seem to find my “utopian” theme. The one I have now is really close …but I would maybe tweak a few things in the footer area to match what I want. Anyways..thanks.

    • I am using a custom built theme using Artisteer for the overall design, along with some manual tweaks. There are some really good sites that show how to make tweaks to various areas. One place you should have in your bookmarks is the WordPress Codex. You can find a wealth of information in there. The problem I frequently run into there is seeing usable examples of the code. That is where places like http://spyrestudios.com come in, to show others how to use the code and provide screen shots of how it looks. If there is something in particular you want, let us know and we can help you get it done.
