How To Use WordPress Post Slug Editor To Get Google’s Attention With Your Blog Post

In an effort to get a more rounded education on the blogging software available, I installed Windows Live Writer. By default it does not have a post slug editor, but it does have a plugin available on their site to change the post slug.

A post slug is what makes the permanent link (permalink) to your post. The permalink is the permanent link to your post. It is defined by the post slug, which is created by the post title. If you post your articles online with WordPress, you will see the post slug after you or WordPress save a draft. There will be an option to edit it at the top of your editing box.

When creating your post slug, focus on the keywords that are used in popular search queries. The fewer keywords you use, the higher their relative SEO value and the shorter the link will be. The permalink should be short. I hope that makes sense to you.

There is a more in-depth discussion on post slugs in a previous article, How Long Should Your Blog Post Title Be?

I have been alternating between BlogDesk and WordPress to write and publish articles. Each has its own benefits and drawbacks. One of the drawbacks with BlogDesk is it does not have a post slug editor, while WordPress does. So I went looking for an offline WordPress editor that would edit the post slug and heard about Windows Live Writer.

I also read on other websites on the topic that you should install plugins to make Windows Live Writer more functional, just like you would with WordPress. So I downloaded and installed Windows Live Writer to see what the buzz is about and how it can help bloggers be more efficient.

There is a nice editing screen with many options, except a post slug editor. That is a plugin you install. After you install Windows Live Writer, close the program and go download the Imtech SEO Slug Plugin.

Once that is installed, open Windows Live Writer and write a post title. Below that, write a shorter slug. Highlight that line and look on the right hand menu for SEO Slug… Click that link and a box will pop up saying the slug has been copied to the clipboard.

That is as far as I got so far. I went back and removed the line that defined the SEO Slug. It should be retained even though it is no longer within the post itself.

I have not posted an article with Windows Live Writer yet, since I am just getting acquainted with it. Yes, I too am trying to break free of the Microsoft products, but sometimes they just make life a little bit easier.

Out of curiosity, I am wondering if you wrote a shorter post title, then used a longer sub-title using the H2 heading tag, if that would suit your purposes. The H2 tag will be great for SEO purposes.
